Restrictions and limits

Telegram shadowban: does it exist and what is really going on

Officially, Telegram has no shadowban. When messages "don't get through", the cause is almost always one of the documented mechanisms: a spam block after reports, anti-spam in large groups, the recipient's archive or privacy settings, or guard bots in chats.

Does Telegram have a shadowban

Officially, no. The word "shadowban" appears nowhere in Telegram's FAQ, terms of service or API documentation. People use it for a situation where the account seems to work, but messages don't get through, nobody replies, or a channel stops showing up in search.

Behind that there isn't one hidden mechanism but several different ones — and almost all of them are documented. Some are visible to the sender, some aren't. Here they are, from the most common.

A spam block is the usual cause

If an account gets reported, Telegram limits it: it can only message people who have its number saved as a contact. Replying to someone who wrote first still works. From the outside this looks like a "shadow": some conversations work, while new messages to strangers don't go through.

There's one way to check: @SpamBot. Durations, appeals and frozen accounts are covered in the guide on spam blocks.

Anti-spam in large groups

In supergroups above a certain size, admins can turn on aggressive anti-spam. Telegram's official bot then deletes spam-like messages on its own; it doesn't need to be added to the group. The size threshold is set by the server — the example config in the documentation uses 200 members.

The sender isn't told about the deletion. If your messages vanish right after sending in large chats but stay in small ones, this may be why. Group admins can reverse false positives through the recent actions log.

Your messages land in the recipient's archive

Recipients have a setting that sends new chats from non-contacts straight to the archive, muted. Telegram may suggest turning it on to people who get many messages from strangers.

The sender can't see this at all: the message is delivered, but the person won't know until they open the archive. Hence the common "messages arrive, but nobody answers".

Only contacts and Premium users can write

A recipient can allow new messages only from contacts and Premium accounts. Unlike the archive, here the sender gets a clear signal: the message isn't sent, and apps see the PRIVACY_PREMIUM_REQUIRED error.

The restriction doesn't apply to contacts or to people the recipient has already messaged.

Since March 2025, recipients can set a price, in Telegram Stars, for messages from strangers. The sender sees the price before sending. It isn't a ban either — it's the recipient's setting — but from the outside it can look like "people stopped replying".

Guard bots in group chats

Many groups run third-party bots that delete messages from newcomers, links or ads and restrict their authors. They only work with admin rights and can delete other people's messages within 48 hours of sending.

Each bot has its own rules, and senders usually aren't told anything. If a message disappeared in one particular chat, look at who the admins are there.

Officially, Telegram mentions only one case: channels running scam giveaways may get a "scam" label and be removed from search. Telegram doesn't publish its search ranking rules; you can report search results via @SearchReport.

Whether Telegram removes regular accounts from search isn't stated officially. Stories about channels disappearing from search en masse are user observations and news, not rules.

One more detail from the API terms: accounts that log in through unofficial clients are automatically "put under observation". What that means in practice Telegram doesn't say. If messages fail with FLOOD_WAIT, that isn't a shadow but a temporary limit — see the separate guide.

FAQ

How do I check whether I'm shadowbanned?

There's no such status, so there's nothing to check. You can check for a spam block via @SpamBot. If there are no limits and still no replies, your messages most likely land in the recipient's archive or get removed by group anti-spam.

Why are my messages delivered but nobody replies?

Often the recipient simply doesn't see them: new chats from strangers go straight to their archive without a notification. The sender can't see this.

Can Telegram remove an account from search?

Officially, only channels running scam giveaways are mentioned: they may get a scam label and disappear from search. Telegram publishes no rules for regular accounts.

GramClaude checks once a day that each account's session is alive, and checks @SpamBot status for all selected accounts at once — so a spam block isn't mistaken for a shadow.
